Miss Blueriver is an older lady from North Village. She is only a few years younger than William, and remembers the Everazure brothers (WIlliam and Cyrrus) from her youth. She is a long-time friend of William's. She herself was never married, but finds fulfillment in teaching the children of North Village.

A family is expected to give only what they can in terms of payment to their children's teacher, and paying an amount proportional to one's wealth is a matter of pride and reputation with the population's upper class. Even the richest family in North Village is not so well off that they can afford a private tutor, so her position is respected if not paid fabulously. She lives comfortably in a small home which was, like many other homes in North, built by William's parents.

Rien volunteers at the school, offering his collection of books and his studious (but only second-hand) knowledge of foreign lands. Because of his role there, as well generally helping out around the town, he is accepted by the village despite his unusual appearance. Miss Blueriver enjoys Rien's company, but often encourages him to do something more with his life.
